Part 6: Scanning

A. Scanning Equipment & Software

The equipment and software in the digital imaging lab is frequently upgraded.  As of April 2003, the following equipment is in use:

Image Capture Equipment
  • 1 Agfa Horizon Ultra Scanner: Able to scan negatives (up to 9.5" x 11") or prints (up to 11.5" x 16.5") Additional RAM was purchased to speed performance. Uses Agfa Photo Look 3.x scanner software.

  • 1 CreoScitex EverSmart Jazz+ flatbed CCD scanner: Able to scan negatives and reflective material up to 12" x 17" Uses Eversmart Jazz Extended Mode software.
  • Polaroid SprintScan 4000 Slide Scanner

  • 4 Mac G4 computers
  • 4 21" NEC high resolution monitors
Color Management Hardware & Software
  • Gretag MacBeth Profile Maker Pro
  • Gretag MacBeth Eye One Pro Calibrator
Additional Software
  • Adobe Photoshop
  • Roxio Toast CD writing software
Miscellaneous
  • 5 2-bay Micronet DataDoc hot swappable decks (each deck holds 2 9GB hard-drives): for temporary storage of images until they are written to CD-ROM
  • 3 Yamaha CD Writers
  • Electrostatic Film Cleaners 
  • Static Control Equipment
  • Custom film carrier: Custom film and print carriers used in conjunction with the scanners are designed and built as needed to accommodate antique photographic materials.
  • Scanner table and light box: The scanner workstation tables were custom designed and built to protect materials, speed production, and prevent operator fatigue. Table surfaces are grounded to control static and dust.
