Photograph Albums Many photographers compile their work into albums. The Denver Public Library's large format digital camera enables us to scan entire album pages without cutting or damage. Examples of albums done for the NEH Grant are the Lang & Pugh Architects Album and the Denver Historic Parks Album. Below is a description of the Marie Greenwood Album. This album was loaned to the DPL African American Research Library by Marie L. Greenwood, and scanned and cataloged by the Denver Public Library Western History and Genealogy Department Photodigitization Program. The album was untitled, a title was assigned: "Album Camp Nizhoni, 1928-1937, Phyllis Wheatley YWCA." The album contains images of Camp Nizhoni in Lincoln Hills (Gilpin County), Colorado, an African American resort located in the mountains west of Denver Colorado. Camp Nizhoni was operated by the Phylis Wheatly chapter, of the Young Women's Christian Association in Denver, Colorado. The album contains images of campers and counselors at Camp Nizhoni, views of the camp, and field trips and activities. It also contains photographs of Mrs. Greenwood and her family, and views of social events, such as picnics and parties, in the Denver metropolitan area. This is a significant album because it shows Denver had an established and successful African American middle class in the twenties and thirties and it introduces contemporary database users to Lincoln Hills, Camp Nizhoni, and the African American presence in Colorado. |
