MARC - Machine Readable Cataloging
The Denver Public Library uses MARC format to compile the information
for each photograph into a "catalog record." These catalog
records are what makes it possible to single out a few photographs from
the thousands in the collection, by entering keywords, dates, names,
etc., into our Internet search interface. The Cataloging
Page has more information about the Library's photo cataloging process.
MARC (Machine Readable Cataloging) is an
international standard developed by the Library of Congress and others
to define the elements within a bibliographic record. It is used for
books, video tapes, etc., and each individual photo in the Digitization
Project's database. The records for photographs differ significantly
from records for books and other items, but have the same basic structure.
Below is an example of a photograph, its catalog record as it appears
in its simple form, and the record in its MARC format.

The arrangement of the entries follows the same prescribed
order as book records, but the various "fields" are given
different emphasis. Some fields are "searchable," and some
are not, meaning the search engine will "see" the critical
facts, and ignore peripheral information. In the live database, some
of the fields are linked to more specific searches, arranged by date.
